Default Won't start intake backfires

I have a 95 z28 with 40,000 miles on it.
I just purchased a new accel distributor, plugs, wires and new headers.
After instalation the car ran for about an hour and just died at the stop light.
I called a mechanic over and we tried putting in a new coil and ignition modual, but still no luck. He assured me it was the distributor even though it was new cause I wasn't getting a spark. I just installed another new distributor and now the intake backfires exhaust smoke after cranking.Itwasn't doing this before. I'm almost postive the distributor is on right, I positioned it until it fell into the pin hole but still wasn't completely flush (about a couple centimeters off the cover). All wires are in correct order.Fuel preasuer is 39psi at regulator. Please help!!!

I thought that the vented opti spark can only go on one way.

They can only go in properly ifthey arealigned properly with the drive pin. However, theycan go in any old way if one does not align it with the drive pin, and then it won't run right, or may even damage the distributor. Pull the distributor out and put it back the right way. Get a service manual with pictures.
