Default Starts, dies, then backfires.

Hey all,

so I appear to have a ghost in my car. My 02 Z28 is my DD, and in the mornings, I stop at a Starbucks to get a coffee. Nearly everytime I leave, I have issues with my car. (I say nearly because it doesn't always happen, which makes it stupidly difficult to test)

What will happen is she'll crank immediately, start, but instead of the revs shooting up to 1000-1100 like normal, it'll climb up to about 8-900, then drop back off and die, usually with a backfire.

I haven't had a chance to test my fuel pressure yet, but I know most of the signs at this point are looking at the fuel pump either losing signal, or just outright failing and not providing enough pressure. (however, if anyone has any other ideas, I would be more than happy to hear them)

I did have a question though. I took a quick look at OEM fuel pumps, (I know Delphi was used) and they're something like 450 bucks. Yet a Walbro on the WS6Project is only 150. Is Walbro just a cheap brand or something? And if I bought a 'high performance' pump, would it affect how my car runs? My understanding was that the excess fuel would just return to the tank, but I'm not expert so I figured I would ask.

Edit: I just realised what the difference is. However this does pose another question. Should I buy the entire assembly and replace the whole thing? Or is just swapping out the pump okay?
Thanks!

Has it been scanned for trouble codes? If you suspect the fuel pump, do a fuel pressure test with the engine running and then see if the pressure holds with the engine stopped. I would be more suspicious of the IAC valve than the pump, but without testing this is just a guess.
The OEM pump is more expensive manly because it is equipped with all the stuff attached to it, including the fuel level sender. If your engine is basically stock, the fuel delivery from the OEM pump is more than adequate.
