rear main seal replacement
My 94 LT1 rear main seal is starting to leak. Motor oil is starting to drip from the small hole at the bottlom of the torque converter inspection plate. Does replacing the seal require the removal of the engine oil pan or can I just drop the automatic trans?
Thanks,
Mike
Thanks,

You can do it with the pan in place, but there is a gasket between the seal housing and engine block, and if it has to be replaced the pan needs to be dropped. Are u sure it is the real seal? These cars like to leak oil where the rear of the intake manifold meets the block. The oil leaks down over the bell housing oozes around into the inspecion cover and drips out the hole making you think the rear seal is leaking.
thanks for the reply z28pete, I was beginning to think nobody responds to posts here! This gen II engines are new to me and I really appreciate all the advice I can get.
as you suggested, I will inspect the rear of the intake for leaks. I remember my 1980 having the same problem no that you mentioned it. thanks again....
