holy cow, i read it but didn't really get it i guess. well then ill do meh oil change now i guess. we should sue! btw whats pressure supposed to be at. mine starts out close to 40 then averages close to 20 can flux to about 10 or even 5 at idle. then as much as 35 when warm.
You must have either some bearing wear or an inaccurate gauge. You might want to go with some thicker oil when you change it. Oil pressure on my LT1 is between 65 and 70 psi, driving moderately with a cold engine. At idle it's around 60. After it warms up at idle it fluxuates between 40-30. That's with a little over 100k miles on the clock, running Mobil 1 synthetic 10w30.
well i can switch to 10-30 i was reading the gauge wrong. it starts at about 40 then stays close to about 30 to 20 idle can be as low as 10. so then its low and this could be a serious issue? what should i replace then before damage occurs. im starting to hear maybe loose rockers or lifter tick, not sure as its kind of soft... agh should i switch to 10-30 now then? i just did an oil change.
10W-30 and 5W-30 are the same weight oil when in warm temps. The W stands for Winter. Here is how it works If you take a pure 10 weight oil and a 10W-30 oil and cool them to 32degrees (aka freezing) and pour them both through the same zahn cup they will both flow the same. but when warm the 10 weight will be much thinner. This allows for your oil to flow more freely when cold nothing else. Also the closer the 2 numbers are together the more real oil and less additives you have.
Move up to a 10W-40 for heavier oil and see if your guage stabilizes a little. It is pretty normal to have higher than normal pressures with a cold engine because the oil is thicker than normal. This should go away about the same time you feel heat from your heater, about 2 blocks ish.
Yellow (penzoil) and orange (fram) filters are BAD!! really bad and if you love your car you will not use them. The Fram Tough Guard filters are not bad, the Mobile 1 and Wix are about the best you can get in most places. Oh and the K&N oil filters are NOT made for the every day car. Those are high flow filters that do not have the full filtering capability of the others on the market today. Those filters are designed for high performance, race type engines with high volume oiling. This filter will allow much more stuff past than the others and this is because people who need the strength of this filter will also be changing the oil more often and will usually not be driving said car daily. Hopw this helps you out some with the oil and filters.

okay so based on the small rattle under the hood and the possible lifter tick and or busted noise. what would be my next best move. as my everyday driver i depend on her to make money. should i save up roughly 500$ and put a good engine in while its still okay? or should i attempt and problem solve some more until then... this could be a sign of a spun bearing. not sure how i could have done so as i haven't red lined it or romped on it hardly ever. at least not since the noise started. then again she is full of squeeks and rattles.
ok so im going to save up as though im buying a new engine, and ill continue to troubleshoot the noises. i changed the filter and she sounds good but we will see. ill post on this thread when i have updates. thanks for all your tips and stuff. if you can think of anything in relation to the noises i should check let me know and ill let you guys know.
If oil pressure jumps after changing to a higher viscosity oil, then you know the lower reading was because of bearing wear. Another thing you can do/could have done, is add a can of that STP oil treatment, or motor honey to your oil. Those aren't snake oil products that "cure" a bad engine, so don't confuse it with that. But what they do is thicken your oil, which gives more of a cushion (thicker film of oil) between the bearings and journals, and that also raises your oil pressure. Using thinner oil will have the opposite effect.
