The Power Programmers are a $300 paper weight unless you need to remove a speed governor or change your speedo for new rear end gears. PCMforless can tune multitudes more than those little programmers. A full dyno tune is always the best choice though, and most of the time not too much more than the hand helds(I have a local place that does a full dyno tune for $500).
Dyno-tunes are great, no doubt, but when you do a dyno-tune, that tune is custom done for whatever the weather is at that particular time. If you get tuned in the winter, because it's cooler, you may be able to mess a bit with the timing and not worry about detonation, but come summer, you may be getting detonation with that same tune because of the warmer temperatures.
That is very true in most cases, but since our wonderful 4th gens have knock sensors and the computer automatically advances the timing to the point of kocking and then backs it down all by itself it's not something that you really need to worry about. I'm not saying that PCMforless does bad work or anything to that effect at all, they run a great service, but you can always get more out of a custom dyno tune that is for yourcar specifically, not for what your car would usually make the best numbers with.

That's great that our cars have knock sensors, but it still doesn't change the fact that a custom tune is basically tuned to run the best on that particular day under those particular conditions. While it may run better than usual with a custom tune, it still isn't going to be optimal.
