Help!!! On side of road need help asap

what code numbers came up? a failing computer can cause missfires that will throw smoke from exhaust and tb. unplug the coil and the injectors and do a compression test on as many cylinders as you can get to.

I should have listened to you in the first place... The opti spark has to be the problem. I got codes 16, 36 and 42, am getting backfiring, won't start. All things consistent with opti failure. That combined with the fact that the engine cranks normally (I have compression) and there is no metal clanking or grinding from the engine leads me to believe that it is the dizzy...
And looking in the service records, the opti has never been serviced, by me or the previous owner. The Silver Bullet has 198,337 miles on her...
Safe to say that the opti is toast.
Other than the water pump, what else should I replace while I'm in there? Thanks, Craby. You have been of tremendous assistance to me. I do appreciate it!!

Its always a good time for plugs and wires they will be a little easier to get to with the water pump off. I just got jegs 8.5mm yellow wires and they worked out real well and where only about 30 or 40 bucks

wow almost 200k,,, lol,,, i would say opti is a good place to start. wires would be a good idea at that milage. i would not be surprized if your intake is leaking a bit of oil from the front and or back.

Yeah, I already replaced the plugs and wires when I got the car... I am wondering how difficult it is to get the UIM off... It, and the TB, are caked with black sludge looking crap, and I wanna give them a good cleaning... Is it hard because of the clearance? Thanks.

lt1 only has one intake manifold. not to tough to change once you get the injector rack outa the way. i used pieces of pencil stuck in the bolt holes to keep in line to help hold the manifold up while getting it back in. using the rtv on the ends makes it tough to just slide it back in and drop staight down. dont want to make the pencil pieces to short or you cant get them out once the mani is in. so before you put the gasket maker on put the mani in and make sure the pencil pieces are long enough. dont want em to long either or they wont go in the holes very good.

I know I'm reviving an old thread, but it turns out (so far) that the problem isn't the opti!!
I took the plug off the coil and cranked the car. No spark.
In a week or so, I'm gonna take the coil and the ICM to get tested. I am pretty sure that it is one of the two, so I will replace them both.
The Silver Bullet will be tearing up the streets again soon!!!

I was on the side of the road today too for about 30 seconds. Going up a hill and when it shifted into 3rd (auto), it didnt engage any gear and was running like crap so I pulled over and shut it off. Started it back up and ran fine all the way home.

Yeah. This happened to me like a month ago. My Z has been sitting since then. Looking at all of the information I have read about, it would seem that the problem is either the ICM or the coil. So I'm just gonna replace them both. I miss my Z... The bus sucks...
