Default '94 tranny problem?

Hi guys... I'm new here... I'm thinking about buying a '94 Camaro Z28 and when I test drove it today it had a big clunk in the transmission when it shifted from 1st to 2nd... otherwise it was fine... I got it back to the dealership and checked the tranny fluid and it was a little low... I was just wondering fom ya'll who have driven them more than I have... Is the transmission a little clunky normally (because my dad has a Ranger and I know Ford transmissions are usually a little clunky) and this problem just a little low fluid or is it a big problem? Oh, its an auto...

They shouldn't be making clunking noises. You may have a bad transmission mount, or a bad torque arm mount, or even a bad egine mount. Could also be a loose flex plate.

Sorry for the inprecise term, lol it was a clunk but it was just shifting really rough... but after it got out of first gear it shifted nice and smooth and I know it will shift rough if the tranny fluid is low but i was wondering if it would be that rough... also how much would it cost and how hard would it be to replace the mounts... and does anyone know how much it would be to swap it with a t-56 just in the ballpark?

The first to second shift on a Camaro is usually pretty tight, but some people modify the transmission to make it even rougher. However, this makes the rest of the shifts feel tight also.

As for the mounts, the material price is pretty reasonable, labor is should be around 1 to 1-1/2 hours.

it might just have a shift kit like mine does. mine shifts real hard! it shifts so hard that the console in the middle"knocks"! but that only happens if i give it a little to much meybe 1/4 throttle. did you hall *** when it did that or were you just going pretty slow? if i go slowy and easy mine shifts and you feel it give you like a super mini wiplash! i'd buy it!

My old trans would not kick into 2nd as bad as the one I have now. I am sure that almost all Chevy cars kick going into 2nd. I don't think it would be a problem, but you never know. How much are they asking for the car?

I bought the car a couple months ago they were asking 7900 i got it for 5800 it's '96 with 100k miles on it, I recently busted the transmission mount on it and I have been looking for a reason to switch it to a T-56 and I wanted to know if anyone knew where they have a kit you can buy that has all the junk you need, and i was wondering if it could be done for under 2000 bucks otherwise Im just gonna replace the mount...

Yea no that rough shift from first to second is standard a little anoying some times but i got used to mine. its really bad when you need new tires and when it does finish shifting it breaks the tires loose everytime.

Don't over look it as being the fluid, because when i bought mine, i thought it shifted good, but what had happened was the tranny had been running bad soo the dealership flushed it and replaced the fluid to cover it up, 2 months later my tranny went...luckly me and my dad fix cars for a living and bought a rebuild kit for it, it was about 150$ for the kit...but if i didnt know a damn thing about cars..i would have had to pay 2000$$ for that fix..be careful.
