96 camaros come with a 3.4 v6. so if you have a 3.8 it should fit your 98 cam just fine

What?

Both the 96 and 98 have 3800's. You should plan on using the Upper Intake/Thottle Body and exhaust manifolds/EGR valve off the 98 on the 96 motor. Its not a big deal because you should replace the intake gasket anyway while you have the motor out since its a comon issue. If you ordered a new long block from GM for the 96 or the 98 it is the same part number. The long block does not come with the above mentioned parts.

The next question is will you pull it out the top or drop it out of the bottom?

I have pulled a V-6 from the bottom not from the top. It was my first 4th gen. Its just my opinion but I would say that with room and a hoist it is easier to go out the bottom. To go out the top you need to remove the exhaust manifolds. That can be a big job by itself. I would also think you would need pull the rad. But I am not sure. If I had to do it again in my shop I would pull it out the top.
