Default engine swap from 91 camaro rs to 79 camaro sports coupe

What all would I have to change to pull the engine out of my 1991 camaro rs and put it in my 1979 camaro? I know I would have to change the 91 engine intake to carb and the distributor. But is this all I would need to do? If you're wondering why in the hell would I want to take a new engine and put it in a older camaro. Because I am getting reallllly poor gas mileage and I am actually somewhat positive that a 4 bbl will actually get better gas mileage than a 2 bbl tbi. I know its ironic. But I think as long as I dont open up the back barrel. It will get better gas mileage aswell as if say I wanted the get up and go. I always have that back barrel to open up . As I know then it will not have good gas mileage. But its just something I'm thinking about doing.

thx,
Chris

What kind of MPG do you get any way? I get 22 on a spirited road trip in my 91 305 TBI. I also have a 2.77 rear gear ratio.

I have discovered that its the way I drive but I was getting around 10 - 12 mpg. Now that I have recieved my 3rd speeding ticket I have calmed my heavy foot . And now it does pretty good I can do 110 miles on a quarter tank of gas. This is the milage I travel daily to goto college. And before it was taking a quarter to college and a quarter back. Where as with a light food I can go both ways on or under a quarter tank of gas. So it was human error. I just underestimated TBI for my own doings.

thanks much,

Zero

to be honest i dont think its worth the effort, it would be easier and cheaper to get a used 350 from a junkyard(one that will give you a warentee on it) with a factory quadrajet and stick it in, a well tuned and good shape quadrajet on a 350 ive seen get upwards of 22mpg(granny driving). i picked mine up for 250, youll spend more than that on a good carb.

also i dont think your 91 would have the mounting point for a manual fuel pump, im not sure when they stopped putting them on, but i know i have a 89 305 from a 89 trans am, and it doesnt have the hole for it, its solid cast, so you would be looking at buying a electric fuel pump them as well. and im a little confused, if you already ave a 4 barrel 305 in your 79? does it not run?

That would make 440 miles to a tank of fuel. There is no way you will get that. The gauge will move slow and you will get more miles on the clock from full to half. After half the gauge will move faste and you will get less miles. The best way to check your MPG is to fill the tank till the pump clicks off. Make note of the mileage and drive for a bit. Then fill the tank till the pump stops again and check how much fuel it took and the difference in your miles and do the math.

The 79' camaro makes a loud pinging sound . Almost like it is about to sling a rod. Though it fades away when engine is revved slightly. And I already have a 650 cfm edelbrock performer carb that hasnt been ran more than 100 miles. Although I plan to make the 79' in to a drag. So now that I have a lighter foot. I think I will just cruise around in the 91 camaro and hop up the 79 so to speak. Best of both worlds!

As for the mechanical mounting point. There is a mounting point however it is covered up with a metal plate. But now I dont think I am going to do this engine swap.

Thx,

hey, i have fitted a 350 injection engine to my 79, i replaced the iron manifolds with a set of headers and put the standard dizzy on it 4 a wile, and a edelbrock performermanifold, i had to e-longate the center two holes slightly on each side of the intake, as the pitch of the bolds are different, however same thread.
to this day, everyone has told me how different the motor sound to other sbc, a lot of them have put it down to injection heads!!! idk
but very good power...i say...go 4 it... oh other than the starter motor housing bolts sre meteric...not imperial, so all of a sudeen most of your bolts are hex drives and metric...oh and a one peice bearing
btw... there is no problem with the mechanical fuel pump as they are only plated over with the blanking plate!!!
but ur transmition will fit..and everything else! its been tried and tested...and prooved very fun!
