Default High Idle

Hi guys. I have a problem, wondering if anyone has any ideas?

I have a 1998 Camaro V6 3.8L

I have a problem with the idle. For the first couple of miles driving, everything is fine, but as soon as the engine starts warming up the idle jumps up to between 2000 and 3000 rpm. If I pull the clutch and force the revs to drop it usually brings the idle back down to normal level, but during normal driving, as soon as i slow down and dip the clutch the idle stays at the previous level or increases to about 3000.

Any ideas or suggestions?

Check your TPS (Throttle Position Sensor) then check your IAC (Idle Air Control) Both are located right infront of your Throttle body the lower one is the TPS and the one located closest to your Intake tube is the IAC, sometimes they both get stuck and will cause a high Idle, Also i would take out the IAC and spray it down with some high pressure brake cleaner, LET IT DRY TOTALLY hit it with some pressureized air or just leave it to dry itself for a few. Also, Check your Intake temp sensor, which is located in your intake tube, take it our clean that also. Then, and this is strictly up to you to do, take a rag soak it in carb cleaner or something similar, take off you intake tube and with the car OFF open the throttle body to WOT and clean in and around the plate that pivots when you hit the gas, get it all nice and new looking and give her a start, i had the same problem and thats waht solved my problem, all together it shouldnt take more then 30 minutes it that at all. Also give your motor a run over and check all your vaccum lines. Hope this helps ya out man!

thats weird, i just answered a similar question in the civic forum.

here try this:
change spark plugs, clean the throttle bore, idle air passages and idle air control motor. Also replace the fuel filter and air filter

Hey,

Thanks for your advice 94red, gave me lots to try.

Before I noticed your reply I'd been trying out a few things but still no luck. The problems getting worse and worse, the car is no longer driveable.

To begin with, before my first post, using a code reader the car gave me an 0507 trouble code, "High idle" i think. This suggested, to me at least, that it was the IAC valve. So i replaced the IAC. No luck, the problem was the same.

I had a spare IAT sensor in the garage, so i changed that too just in case, still no luck.

The next time i took the car out it got worse and worse the further i drove, so i turned around to get it home and take a look. It now idles constantly at 5000rpm from cold and when its warm.

As soon as i arrived home, I plugged in the code reader and got three error codes; 0121, 0122 and 0300. These being TPS performance, TPS low voltage and engine misfire codes.

Ive had the TPS out, cleaned it up and tried again, still no luck.

Ive ordered a new TPS but still waiting for delievery so I will have to see what happens when that arrives. Considering my luck im not holding out much hope itll be the fixi need.

If I have no luck with a new TPS, you got any ideas on other causes? A few other forums have suggested maybe a wiring problem at the ECM? Think thats likely?

Thanks for your help!!!!!!
