I wouldnt do it you have gas run down to the drill motor boom. What about where it comes out or not knowing what kind of car where the electric fuel pump goes in. At work we work with companies the remove underground storage tanks Ive seen some stupit things done people get away with but it only takes one time... if you ever had your hands on fire (speaking from experience) you will not take the chance.

as i am sure u know not a good ideal like has been it only takes once. a few ideal that might help is can u take the tank out that would make life easier if it can b done with out droping the rear axle. another ideal is depending on yr and body i think u can get through the top of the tank underneith the carpet in the back and drain it or i think the best in this problem would b find ur fuel line if it has an elec pump then disconect it after that use some hose that fits and sphion the gas out by turning the key on (elec pump kicks on)this is way easier then the by mouth way trust me , then clear as much gas as u can out then open ur gas cap and all vent s as much as possablie for a day or two or more that will greatly reduce the risk as u do what u need to do BUT AND THIS IS THE BIGGEST THING TO REMBER is that gas in a liquid form is way less likly to start fire but the fumes will lit in a min. Hope this helps but either way pls B SAFE

You also run the risk of gettin gall the little pieces of metal that occurs from drilling to fall off into the tank and contaminate your fuel. Why cant you remove it and turn it upside down over some empty canisters (gallon jugs, gas cans etc...) and a funell?
