Default Camaro - Carb/Fuel Filter Nut Leaking Gas!

ey fellas.

So, I just noticed that there is a small fuel leak coming out of my carb where the fuel filter nut connects to the carb. I've only owned the car a few weeks, and I think the prior owner might have stripped the interior threads in the carb where the fuel filter nut screws in. The gas is dripping very slowly, but enough to be noticeable and dangerous. I've tried that PVC tape to seal it up, but it hasn't worked.

I'd rather not have to buy a brand new carb for the car, but having a fuel leak is unacceptable. Is there a cheaper alternative to get the carb re-threaded? Is it worth it? Does anyone have any ideas?

If anyone is looking to help a new Camaro owner out, let me know. Thanks!

[X(] im gonna assume this is on a quadrajet carb so get back to us to verify. if it is then your gonna have to remove the fuel filter nut/housing and check the round gasket at the end of the housing(round white, clear nylon about the size of a quarter) this is the cause of most q-jet fuel leaks. they do make a special wrench just for the fuel filternut which makes things alot easier. check it out and get back to us kurt

There is that nylon seal on the inside of that filter nut or there should be an aluminum washer on the outside.
You should be able to look at the filter nut and see what it needs if nothing is there. The nylon type will have a small lip on the end of the threads that the seal goes on. The aluminum washer type wont have that and the washer goes over the threads and seals on the outside of the carb body.

Edit: Ha. You posted while I was responding.

Thanks for the quick responses!

It is a double-barrel Rochester carburetor. When I replaced the fuel filter, after noticing the leak, I saw a very thin, translucent nyoln-ish gasket in the carb side of where the two parts connect. It was about the size of a quarter, but it was extremely thin and useless looking from what I remember. Is that what you're talking about? I don't remember any metal washer-type gasket.

Could I put a thicker gasket in there and help this problem?

I don't know how much it'll help, since it's a ****ty cell phone picture, but as you can see there's about a millimeter and a half gap in between where the nut screws into the carb.

The leak is coming out of the bottom. MadMike, would that aluminum washer type somehow cover that gap that's currently there? Or is that how it's supposed to be?

[X(] that translucent looking nylon thing is the gasket and it sits on a collar on the end of the fuel filter housing. youll need to get a new one and dont double them up!! hopefully you havent tried tightening until you damage the place it seats inside the carb. local auto parts store should have one

The tube nut has a flare and should not leak there. It does not need a gasket there. The fuel mat be leaking and running down the underside of the filter body.

Ah, ****. My mistake, my mistake. That first image I posted points to the wrong area... It's definitely coming from where the filter body connects to the carb and not the tube nut. [&:]

Here's an updated image:

So, I probably just need a new gasket to sit on the end of the fuel filter housing and that should fix things up?

Worst case scenerio, what is the guy before me did? Does that mean I need a new carb?

[&:] yes thats where it will leak if the gaskets bad or missing try the new gasket and well go from there..... remember not to put a gorilla tightening job on it as it should only take a good snug tightening to eliminate leaks the nylon gasket can be over tightened and squished into ineffectiveness
