Hi guys. I just started working on a 1987 Camaro with a 700r4 transmission. My problem is that it shifts smoothly from Park into reverse and drive and over-drive, but when in drive it doesn't seem to shift out of 1st. if I try to manually shift into 2nd it doesn't seem to shift, but manually shifting to 1st feels like a normal down-shift. Does anyone have a suggestion as to what might be causing this?

 

either the tranny has sat up for a length of time and it has gotten sticky or the cluthes are roasted. you can put it in drive and get it up to around 30 mph then stop. put it in reverse and get it as fast as you can handle it ... stop put it back and drive ... do this several times then drive a bit and see if you can get it to shift. if it does drop the pan and replace the fluid and filter. if it doesn't break out your wallet and spring for another tranny or rebuild. also make sure the lockup solenoid is plugged in. if it is disconnected it will cause it to shift at only very high RPM's.
