Sprin Car Engine
This doesnt relate to camaros directly but I thought it was interesting. I stopped at a guys garage I do some work for he races and repairs spring cars. I talked to him a little about sprint car engines, he had one sitting on the floor that just came back from the engine builder it is a $42,000.00 engine. It produces 950 horsepower at 9000 rpm on methanol and is around 410 ci. It is a small block chevy design aluminum block that has a raised camshaft location for further increases of stroke, the camshaft uses needle bearings not coventional. The use a dry sump oil system,it currently has a 3.80 inch stroke gun drilled crank and 6 inch rods. The crank flange surprisingly only has four bolts to connect the driveshaft(direct drive) I believe he said it runs a 12 degree head on it with titanium valves, the pistons are ceramic coated not just the tops but the skirts also. He said the ceramics come into play because they have a valve on the fuel supply that leans out the fuel supply on the straight away so the pistons can get hot and it will not damage them. On a side not they are also using ceramiic wheel bearings. It is surprising to see the technology these guys utilize.
What made me sick was it was one of three, that one was the most$ the cheap one was $25000. The engines can make more power but they are more concerned with how it makes power. One of the other engines was a shorter rod engine he said it makes more torque they will use it for a shorter track.
