Default Crate engine or rebuilt engine for better mpg?

This is sort of theoretical question since I do not have Camaro yet. I am just exploring options.

Lets say I was to pickup 78-81 Camaro with decent body and shot engine. Keeping in mind that I am looking for a weekend cruiser (not racer), would it make more sense to get crate engine or rebuild the existing one? I know that most of you would rather have 300+ HP cars but I am OK with less power and more mileage per gallon.

Thanks.

Engine power does not make that much difference on fuel mileage, what really makes a difference is how much of the available power you use.

If you are looking at saving gas, increased MPG,and you choosea carwith an automatic, you might want to think about the transmission. An overdrive trans could save you 30% or more depending on the rear end, carb, etc.
