Default 1969 Camaro fuel system modifications

I have a 1969 SS Camaro that started life as a small block car but now has a 427 Big Block in it. I bought the car with the electrical system and the plumbing unfinished. I had consulted some folks that steered me to installing a 1/2" fuel line from the tank and have it almost complete. My question is this:

In order to install the 1/2" line and avoid the headers to some degree I am looking at having to install a canister style filter in the area where the battery was originally located. To do this I would raise the fuel line about 8" above the pump location and then back down to the pump, then up to the carb. With a mechanical pump, will the fuel flow properly through the system with these changes in elevation? I do not know enough about how much the pump will "pull" through the system or if gravity has to help it out. Please provide any help you guys that know more than me can offer.

Thank you,

"Water seeks it's own level", so does gas. You'll have to do a visual and see/measure where that level of the highest point before the pump is, in relation to the gas tank. If it's higher than the lowest point of the tank, you're going to have some drain-back issues.

Thanks for the help there, That makes sense put the way you did. So how full you keep the tank directly will impact the issue if the filetr is close the same elevation as the tank when it is full and so on. Do you know if there any backflow preventers ever used in fuel systems, a check valve of sorts?
