Your shifter linkage could be bad happened to my '95 3.4L no problem w/trans just the linkage from the shifter to the trans...

NO, follow your manual's directions as to how you should check your Trans. fluid you have to run through each gear for a few seconds, and as I recall the car should already be warmed up. Read the manual's procedure!
