Well our silver car is in the shop. It's been "ticking" for a while now. We had someone tell us it's rods and someone say lifters. Mechanic said lifters right off but he's tearing into engine in the morning. Expensive? He said about $200 to $250 to take apart.

 

...And $1,000 to put it back together?
Lifters tick, rods don't, they knock. It could be a worn cam lobe, a lifter gone flat, or a lifter that's gummed or sludged up inside.
The mechanics exploratory surgery should be able to tell.

 

Norally I like to do a couple of oil changes with Mobil one and a good filter. Most of the time it is just a little dirt in the lifter and it works itself out.

 

250 just to tear down... that sux.. next come all new lifter which will run u about 20$ a piece x12 then the gasket upper and lower intake which will prob run u $150 then the valve cover gaskets which will coat about $20 and if he needed to remove cam, that's another $20 for timing chain cover gasket. And if he takes the timing chain cover off, y not replace chain and gears. Thats about 100$+ ( would do this if suggested ) then the oil change then the fist of labor.. ya..about a $1000 sounds right. I have had a lot of litter problems with my 3.8 since rebuild.

 

Well the $250 was the quote to take apart, diagnose and put back together if we don't want it repaired. We haven't heard any updates yet. We're prepared to spend $1000 on it at this point. A true Camaro owner/fan doesn't give up on their car, they fix it as they can and hang on to it regardless of the cost.

 

They are changing out the lifters at this point. No guarantee that is what it was but the main engine components all look good. I'm just pissed that they are taking so long. We took it in thurs night for work on friday morning. Son calls about lunch yesterday and they are working on it then. About 2 hours later they call back and suggest the lifters be replaced while in there. So today my son starts college and he commutes. My husband works days, I go in tonight and then my kids have to be picked up. We can't survive on 2 cars. Oh and my camaro needs ignition switch replaced. I have it already and the VATS key made. Just got to find the money to spend on it. One car at a time.

 

Does your 95 have the more common 3.4, or the not so common 3.8 engine? The 3.4 uses flat tappet lifters, the 3.8 has rollers. Prepare for some cam lobe failure in the future if a 3.4 is what you have, and all they are changing is the lifters and not the cam too.
