Default New camaro owner with questions

Hi guys

I just bought a 1997 camaro rs with 130k miles. It's going to be my first real car. That 3.8 motor is really sweet, I was looking at an older one with the 3.4 but I'm glad I went with the 3.8. Even with so many miles it still runs well. It was super smooth and quiet on the highway. The previous owner put on a nice dual flowmaster exhaust which just sound so good.

I was just wondering. What's the difference between the regular D and the D inside a square in the shifter positions? The guy that sold it to me said that it runs faster when it's in the squared D. I've noticed that the engine revs a tiny bit when I shift into the squared D which doesn't happen when you shift into regular D.

Also I've noticed the temparature guage stays around the 1/4 mark even when it's warmed up. Is that normal? I though the middle position was where it is supposed to be.
