Don't get that the LS1 will take a different K-member. Since your front suspension is mounted to your K memeber you will be doing double work. You should just get the LS1 K-member and build that. You going to want the LS1 upgraded rack anyway.

No easy way to fix the wiring. You will need all V8 parts. Problem is there are too many things looking for a v8 signal and can not be changed. LT1 to LS1 (OBD2) is a easy swap electronics wise. V6 to V8 is not. I am sure a electronic tech could figure everything out but to the best of my knowledge no one has pinned out exacly what needs changed. That is why it is easier to just swap everything from a V8. Spending 20 hours figuring out what needs changed in a V6 wiring harness is not worth it when you have to swap to a v8 gage cluster, V8 body control modual and ABS system anyway. Might as well swap the V8 harness while your in there.
Ya I guess so. I've been researching it alot and a few forums say to just make your own wiring harness as it's easier and twice as fast. They also say it's an easy swap for the average mechanic doing it that way. Parts needed are everything in the front end suspension wise, tranny, and gauge cluster. That's for the 98+ swap. I found that kinda hard to beleive but that's coming from guys who have done it to there cars. As for interior it's all the same. Same fuse panel and everything. Just wish I could find more of a build thread to post up hear for the guys who want to do the swap.

Getting the car running will not be the major issue. Getting everything else working is a big task. People put LS1's into just about everything. But a lot of what works in a Camaro needs input from the PCM.
Edit:
Here is the link I was talking about. At the bottom of the page you see a capatability chart for years. Look how it shows very little is capatible from 96 to 97. I can not imagine a 96 to 98 will be easier.
