identify / explain :P
Hello,
Guys i need to know what's the function / name of this thing that moves up and down and is held by this boxlike part that seems to be broken, because everytime i press on the throttle or the brakes from a stand, it makes an annoying sound, i have seen two V6 camaro's with this problem and we are intrested in knowing how to solve it. should we replace this small part that keeps being hit?? or what? leaving it this way may have future consequences. My car is a V6 1996 A4. Thanks in advance.
Here's the pic, the thing that moves is in the upper right part of the picture.

That's the torque arm which is connected to the rearend. It keeps the rear axle from trying to wrap around in circles from the lifting effect of the torque. Think of your torque arm as an extended version of an old school traction bar. Your mount is broken, either the one shown in the picture, or it's your transmission mount that's torn (where the trans sits on the cross member). Right now, every time you nail the throttle, the tail of the trans (or the torque arm) is lifting and smacking the tunnel. Take it easy with the right foot until you get the mount replaced.
i think its the torque arm mount that is broken , the one that's shown in the picture, is it necessary to replace it as soon as possible, or i can drive on it for a while? untill at least i can get a mount from the junkyard.
If it was the trans mount, I wouldn't be as concerned as long as you went real easy on the throttle, because you would have the weight of the trans helping to hold it down. But with your bar mount broken, as soon as you give it some gas, it's gonna lift and smack. Letting it do that puts your u-joints in more of a bind, which isn't good for them. I know this may sound like a dumb temporary fix, but can you get a block of wood wedged between the top of the bar and the trans tunnel? Then screw it to the upper part of the vertical bracket to hold it in place. Even then, drive it easy.
