how come when you look in the hatch from the back to the left there is a opening in the left side and not the right??

No, in fact a few after-market companies sell ones that fit in that spot! Search Google for them...

 

Because the spare tire and jack are on the other side. It is possible to put a sub in there. IMO I think it looks clean if you go that route. I don't get why some people do it the other way and put in a box that takes up their entire trunk.
