Hatch Pull down?

Hatch Pull down?
I"M new to almost everything involving these cars, but I love them and I want to learn as much as I can, so bare with me.
I know that the pull down thing pulls down the hatch tight after you just gently let it touch down itself. Well that's how it should work anyway. How exactly does this work? Is there a sensor, or a switch to tell it to activate? Why do they always seem to brake or not work for people? I would love to learn more about this.
Thanks guys.

the hatch pull down is exactly what you described with a small black sensor inside of it that tells it to go up and down. it is on plastic guides inside of a metal track. Some of the reasons they stop working is that these plastic guides wear out. Sometimes the relay may fail or the motor burns up. The main reason I would surmise is from people slamming their trunk down on it when it is in the up position. Some of the componets are plastic and slamming the trunk will break it.
I dont know what models or years that the camaro had the option. I have one in my 86z28. I am not sure but I dont believe you can retro fit one. Either you have it or you dont. Its not really an option I would look for, more novelty than convenience. How often would you really use a camaro trunk, right?
