Ok boys! Need some help here. First off i new to this forum, i spend most of my time in the v6 mustang forums. Thats what i have. I registered here because my girly has a 96 camaro v6. The car has had a rough life engine wise 160xxx miles. The heads were replaced years ago, car blew a head gasket and overheated and cracked the drivers side head. She had problems with losing antifreeze. So last summer i replaced the radiator, it was visually leaking out.
So driving along the temp gauge gets up to temp, turn on the heat and gets warm for a sec, then cools off. We have also replace the tstat. With the car up to temp the water hoses goin into and from the heater core feel about the same temp. Took the hoses off and water flow is about the same goin thru the core.
Need your help here, cold weather is coming soon and i dont like to hear her nag my *** about it. What about a lower intake gasket? Really just trying to pinpoint the prob so we dont have to spend alot of money on it.

According to your description the heater core is not clogged. If that is the case, there is a possibility that the outside of the core is clogged with dirt, or that there is a problem with the air doors or temp control linkage.

 

You might want to back flush that heater core. just to make sure. You will be surprised at what all comes out of it. My Jeep did that once and about froze me to death. I could not figure out what the deal was. I replaced the thermostat, vac valve that activates the flow of water through it. I also had water coming out the hoses that looked like normal flow but an ole shade tree mechanic I meet at a bone yard told me to back flush the core and it would work. I pushed water through it for ever before it came out clear. Haven't had a heating problem since in that ole jeep.

 

ok pete, i have not had a chance to take a look at the actual core itself. Where should i look for the air door and linkage?
We did back flush the core before. When we were testing the flow. We put water in both ways for several minutes. That was my buddies thoughts too. Thanks for the responses and anything addition will help me alot. I dont have alot of experience working on a camaro, and could always use tips and tricks.

 

Does the door zzpete refers to work on vac? If so, you might get lucky and have a vac leak. Does the vents work and move from vents to windsheild and floor ok? I think that door is up under the dash on the passenger side. on the heater box.

 

oh yeah the selector works fine.

 

All the air control doors are in the HVAC plenum box under the dash. Check the cable from the temp control **** to the temp control door first, just follow the cable & see if it is still working. All other controls use vacuum motors to work the various air doors, so check all vacuum hoses & connections for leaks.
