To bump this thread back after a long time...

I had the transmission out and decided to send it for a rebuild. Nothing seriously wrong, just occasionally grinding some gears and the aforementioned notchiness in neutral. If you move the shifter to the left in neutral and let go, it comes back to center. But if you move it to the right, it doesn't make it all the way back to center. You can nudge it and it will "click" the final bit back to center.

I mentioned it being notchy to the rebuilder, and he thought it was just tied to the bearing/synchros which he replaced. I got the trans back, and it still has the same problem. I am going to bring it back to him tomorrow.

Anyone have any idea what might be wrong?

then its gotta be in the trans, take it back to the shop and see what they say. maybe if you know anyone with a manual trans camaro and see how it shifts. lol, maybe a local car lot has one you can test.

Yeah I was hoping to somehow find a good one to compare. Anyway I dropped it off and am waiting for the phone call...

I finally got it back and they told me it's normal. All they did was play around with some adjustment on the Hurst shifter. Now I have to find a good transmission and compare. I read that the case can stretch on these so I'm wondering if that could be an issue. I'm also wondering if whatever the previous owner did to the original shifter to bend it could have tweaked something inside the transmission, although they told me the shift forks/shafts were straight.
