3rd and reverse problems on a 6 speed
okay... so i just got this 1997 z28 with a six speed trans. the problem is that 3rd usually tries to pop out of gear before the clutch is out all the way, and reverse is worse. the car will not go into reverse AT ALL. not when the cars off, clutch is in, out, sideways, nothing. when the car is on and u put it where reverse should be and let the clutch out it just makes this horrible noise like its stripped. the only way it goes backwards is if you put all the force of your arms on the gear and slowly ride the clutch with no gas. and sometimes it still slips. its almost like you cant put the shifter far enough forward to put it in gear and can only catch the outer edge of the teeth
the car has a b&m shifter on it and i read somewhere that if its installed wrong the trans could do that?
other than that im pretty much clueless as to what it could be besides completely screwed.
any thoughts please?

Your tranny needs work. Sounds like reverse is complely blown and the sync in 3rd is going. Manual transmission can be very expensive to repair. You may want to pick up a used low miles unit and install that or a working high mile unit and have new bearing and syncs installed.
When reverse blows it can damage the counter gear. The counter gear by itself will be $800ish new by itself. Add in the reverse gear and the rest of the rebuild you can hit 2k with labor pretty quicky repairing a damaged T56.

i agree about third. however i found with reverse that if you are driving, downshift into first and come to a stop then immediately go to reverse it works fine. but if you are just in neutral and try to put in reverse it sounds stripped
