This is the project section where you would give us detail and update on a project you are working on. You want the V6 tech sub forum. In there is a sticky for beginning mods. IMO step one is just making sure everything is up to date. Things like plug wires, plugs, filters, flush coolant just about every maintenance item. Normally when I buy a car take of a front end alignment and a coolant flush day one. Yes you can do the coolant flush at home but it tends to be messy.
Again in IMO headers and cat back exhaust is the best bang on a 96. The stock 96 manifolds are so bad GM upgraded them in 99.
The bad news we are now living in a world where a Chrysler mini van has 287 hp your very heavy 96 V6 is never goin to be "fast".

Fast and quick are two different things,if you want quicker acceleration and aren't worried about top speed then changing the rear end gears to something quite a bit lower ratio is a lot of bang for the buck.
Highway gas mileage will suffer some and top speed will be less but you'll feel the difference off the stop light in the seat of your pants..

What about a bigger throttle body, cold air intake, new exhaust and then use a Hypertech Power Programmer. That's what I used to do on my Camaro's. I got much better use of the upper RPM's. It used to go to 6,000 much slower until I did those mods. It's like the factory was suffocating the engine.
