In the past (700r4 years) automatic transmission where engine specific in their assemblies. A 350 TPI 700r4 would have more clutches and plates in the clutch packs and in some cases more gears in the plantary gears set. Let say a 2.8 would have 4 plantary gears the 350 may have 6. It made sense all the extra weight and cost for no real purpose. I can see the benefit of having a standard one fits all tranny but GM tends to get every penny they can out most parts.
This is all easy to fix, if you are doing a rebuild you can add the gears pretty cheap and any decent master kit will have the max clutches and plates for the clutch pack.

I read that in the 1993 the transmission was not computer controlled, and was reffered to as the 4l60 (no "e")
Does that sound correct? If so is it interchangeable with, say a truck of the same year, or would some modification need to be done. I am not very well versed in trans.
Thanks

the 93 uses a 4L60 or 700R4, same thing. mine has the 5 pin plug. they do not have removable bellhousing and dont have the computer needed to operate the 4L60E. not sure on the interchange with a truck tranny.
