and camaro69 he meant while the car was moving on my cousins old car the button was broken and you could shift at anytime with out pressing it and his son accidentally kicked it into park while he was going about 65 and he said the loudest noise came from the trans and the car never moved again
would this be something i could do my self? what will i need to this?

ohh ya easy remove your center console unbolt the linkage from the shift lever the get under the car and unbolt the linkage from the trans theres also prob some sort of bracket under the center that keeps the cable tight im pretty sure you need to bolt everything up in neutral tho when you unbolt the linkage from the trans push the part on the trans all the way towards the front of the car then back 2 clicks and thats N

got the problem fixed today. the bolt that connected the linkage to the trans had almost came unscrewed. so i tightened it back up and shifting into gear like it should.
