Default For those who have done a tranny swap...

I know that the topic of a transmission swap has been overdone a long with motor swap questions, but I need an answer. Whoever has extensive automotive knowledge please help me answer this question although I know there is no definitive answer. I just want to know what a reasonable price would be for a tranny swap from a stock automatic 1999 v6 camaro to manual. Can someone please break down the parts I would need, fair pricing for all those parts, and possibly fair pricing for labor? I have a friend who owns a shop that may be able to do the labor, and I know this question is pretty general but please any advice is appreciated. Thanks in advance.

No responses because no one does the swap. Unless you got a super deal on a full donor car and are ready to do all the work yourself, the end result is not worth it. Either keep what you got, or sell it and buy a 5 speed.

To do it right you would need to replace the computer system and entire wiring harness. You would also have to reflash the new computer to to be ok with security system. That is going to be big bucks labor wise. Your going to need to cut out the floor and replace it with a floor section out of the standard car.

The price of all the parts, thats simple you can pick up a doner car with a blown motor for about $800 the labor is going to get expensive. This is not the kind of jobs most garage would even attemp. You will need to find a custom place.

(this assume removel from the doner and installing it in yours.
Changing the wiring harness about ---- 6-8 hours.
Section of floor ------ 4-6 hours
Pedals ------ 2-3 hours
Installing the Trans itself----- 4 hours
Re flashing the computer $80 charge

So most shops are around 75 per hour.
Parts:
Doner car $800
new clutch, flywheel, slave and master cylinder $500

Labor
16-21 hours (average $1387.5)

If you can find a place willing to do it it should come out a little shy of 3K. So are you reallly going to dump 3K into a 5k car just to make it worth 4.5K?

I gave this some thought when my engine was out for rebuild and even then, it seemed like more than i wanted to try. SRY for the dissapointment on this, but somethings are tough to do. And it can be done,,,,,,,,,,

Gorn...THANK YOU for breaking down pricing and not just telling me its too expensive and to go on my way. I don't know what people consider expensive so I wanted to know actual numbers. Parts aren't too bad. I have a friend who owns a shop so I'm going to see how cheap he would be willing to do whatever labor he is capable of. Also, I'm not sure I'm doing this...just weighing out my options. If I sold this car, I'm not too sure I'd buy another Camaro. This was a car I ran across by chance and don't mind it, but don't love it. What I love is the fun in the potential of making this a project and a unique car that is fun to drive. I don't know if you saw my other post but I saw a video on youtube of a v6 camaro with an sts turbo. I've seen the remote mounted sts turbo on a few cars and think it'd be fun. I only have 56k miles on my car so yes dropping in all that money might seem like a waste, but if I do this over the course of a year or 2, its not that bad and I have a fun, unique car that still didn't cost me as much as financing my Grand Prix GTP from a dealership. When I bought the GTP it had 60k miles on it. I can easily get a new car in the spring instead, which I have been considering, but making this a project would actually save me money over that option and I could buy a beater truck for the winter and keep the camaro miles as low as possible. Thank you all for your help

So its Go Big or New Car. I never really went to FTV6...Turbov6Camaro makes me want to do it...I'll probably end up getting a new car though we'll see. I want a 5th gen Camaro but the thought of making payments again....no thanks.
