Looking at the engine from the front of the car.

Cylinders go like this:
5 6
3 4
1 2

Coils: 1/4 6/3 2/5

Does it matter which side of a coil the wire is on?

When I was trained on the DIS (direct ignition system) back in the 80s we where told the coil fires both plugs at the same time. He even said since each side of the coil fires in a different polarity switching the wires after 30K would mean more even wear on the plugs.
