A flashing CEL indicates serious misfire, bad enough to damage the catalyst, that is if you still have one.

Yes. With heavy misfire a lot of raw fuel reaches the cat causing it to overheat and commit suicide. That is why the PCM is programmed to flash the CEL light, rather than just having it steady on when there is a serious misfire condition.

P0300 indicates random misfire, usually caused by a lean fuel mixture. Check the fuel pressure with a gauge. Having fuel squirt out of the rail does not mean the pressure is right.

also change the fuel filter. dump contents from the tank side of the filter into a clear container and see what it looks like.

I'll try that within a day or two. Im cleaning out the garage.

Im liking the sound of that much better, I was beginning to think that the optispark was going bad, and at 600 dollars, with new spark plugs, well, that would put the kabash on this car until next spring.

silly question probably, but should I have the code erased after I change the fuel filter? If it comes back, what should I look for next?

I changed the filter, it needed it, but after a half mile or so, the light started flashing again. I'll have to learn how to check the fuel pressure tomorrow. I'm not sure if the gauge I have can check that, will have to wait until I can get back to the garage.
