Hey guys, yesterday I was driving my 93 camaro z28 6spd(167k on odo) for about 15 minutes. I was driving approx 45mph under normal acceleration and my car made a LOUD bang or pop noise from the engine area and immediately the engine also died. I got scared like the engine just blew up and turned into a neighborhood. I tried starting it and it cranked right back up. Drove fine for about the 5 minutes i drove to my housf afterwards.

I am very scared and I called my mech and he said most likely a backfire and bring it in if it happens again. I researched on the net and kinda sounds like an opti but not sure. This is the first time it happened to me and any info is appreciated. thanks!

 

Is it making any other noises now?

 

check the coil wire and make sure its on all the way. how old is the opti do you know?

 

no but right before it happened i did notice a weird swishing noise like if a piece of scrap metal was spinning on a moving part, sorry i didnt mention this before.
It wasnt very loud but a subtle weird noise i dont know if it had anything to do with it
I am not sure i bought the car a few months ago. All stock other than moroso intake and magnaflow catback

 

potato in the exhaust maybe. lol. opti life is about 60k miles. can go 100k or 1 mile. did you get any dash lights like check engine

 

I've had a bad opti before, and it made the engine run like crap, but it still ran. Has anybody had their opti make the engine act like this guys did; bang yer dead, then it starts right back up and runs fine again? Sounds like ignition is a possibility, just not so sure about it being the opti.
