Default Engine Oil Question

I figured I'd get you guys' opinion on this.. My grandpa tries to rule the family in the car care department.. Like literally monitors what we buy ect to go in our cars.. I have a 93 3.4 and I use 5w-30 high mileage oil. He swears by, and I mean completely swears by RotellaT 30w. Last time I changed my oil at his house he made me use it, and an old dusty filter off the shelf (he used an air compressor to blow the dust out) I just got chewed out for changing my oil again and using a new filter. What do you guys think? Is there any harmful effects of using his method?

Tempature plays a huge role in your oil viscosity needs so remember that. and for a second i thought you were me lol. sounds so familiar. i agree fram filters and i personnally like either valvoline or castrol gtx.

RotellaT sold by Shell is designed for diesel engine use, and although it won't damage your engine is does not have the proper additives for gasoline engines. Oil and filter should be changed at the same time, otherwise if the filter is not changed all the dirty oil in the filter will contaminate the new oil. If the filter was just dusty from sitting on the shelf it should be OK, but if it was dirty from using it, blowing air on it won't dislodge the dirt absorbed by it. I am an old timer, but grandpa needs to get better informed.
