Default Distributor replaced on 95 but now it's backfiring and died

I have a 95 Z28 that just turned over 105k. It's been running a little rough since the head gaskets were replaced. This weekend I had my mechanic replace my distributor and when I picked it up I thought felt better but still a little off. Then it backfire speeding up to get on the freeway. Got it home and it seemed ok. This morning on my 35 mile commute to work it backfired while on the freeway a few times, then as I took my exit and came to a stop it was running so rough and then it died. Would not start back up. What do you all think? Distributor not installed correctly? Something not adjusted right?

sure sounds like a bad opti. what kind did you get. did the rotor screws get lock tight on them. good idea to pull cap and do that with new ones.

Turns out the culprit was the ignition module. The ignition coil was changed a few weeks ago, trying to get this back to smooth running since the head gaskets blew in Jan. New opti, ignition coil, ICM, plugs, fixed a collapsed vacuum line on the opti, fixed a couple oil leaks one of which had covered the coil. I picked it up last night, it's a lot better, didn't backfire and die and it almost 100% smooth again. Still has a tad bit of rough to it when looking for that passing gear but it does go. Idle doesn't jump anymore either, just a bit rough but not horrible, just not smooth like it was. I swear this car is killing me...at 105k I just wonder what the previous owner did to it with the 75k it had on it before I purchased it.

what plugs are you using? maybe run it for a couple hundred miles and see what the plugs look like. maybe pull a 02 sensor and see if its looking fouled. could be running rich.
