Ill give you another suggestion. Something I love to see when buying a used car is a record of maintenance...maybe a folder of reciepts, or at the very least a written log book of oil changes and/or major repairs that have been done. Incidentially, when I sell a car, I ALWAYS include the folder of recipts. Ive had guys tell me it was the deciding factor in purchasing my car over another.

Question

so the 3200 guy is saying 3000 and it needs a valve cover gasket? the guy says the valve cover is leaking. Is this worth what he is saying? is this a hard job to do? i saw a step by step guide on the forums but still need an idea of the work/labor. thanks! also could there be any other problems with the car that could cause this?

So, as far as the valve cover gaskets go...no too bad of a job really. A little time consuming if youve never done the job before...

HOWEVER.... my guess would be the "valve cover gasket leak" is actually an intake manifold leaking some oil from the rear. Its pretty common on LT engines with some miles on them. Not a particularly hard job either, but more involved than valve cover gaskets alone. You can do it yourself and fairly inexpensive as far as parts....

Does the seller have reiepts or maintenance records of any kind?

^^^ agree, valve cover gaskets leaking is pretty rare. intake at front and rear is common. did it look like the oil was coming from the top of the passenger side valve cover? that would be blow by and a indicator the motor is not happy.

I will ask him about recipets tomorrow and he said its that because he just did the "intake manifold gaskets". so i should look for it leaking oil near the passenger side indicting the motor is at or near detonation? not trying to get another persons mess,

theres a vent hose that goes from the throttle body to the valve cover on the passenger side. thats for the pcv system. if there is oil coming from the valve cover where this hose goes in the valve cover then the pcv valve is not working correct or you have lots of blow by. i would not be surprised if the intake was installed incorrectly. got to get the rvt on it just right or it will not seal right.

Good job on not letting your heart over rule your common sense. Ive been the victim of just that scenario.... keep looking and try to have fun while looking.... the hunt is part of the fun in getting your next ride.
