Default Check engine light bulb

My check engine light was on for a long time. It turned out to be the cam positioning sensor. Got it fixed and no more codes come up. But the check engine light doesn't come on anymore when you first turn the key. I was told by the dealer that the bulb is not a servicable part and that you have to replace the entire circuit board that sits behind the dash. A local mechanic said he thought I could pop the board out and replace that bulb. Anyone know for sure?
