Default Cam sensor

Howdy everyone. I’ve been searching the internet to no avail...I have a 98 Z28 and it’s running a little weird. Cuts out at full throttle under load. It had a bad crank position sensor and I replaced it and it improved drastically but it’s still a little off. I’ve checked the mass airflow sensor and had it set up while running hooked up to a snapon modis looking at all the stats while running and everything (I think) looks good...mainly due to not knowing how this car is tuned (has a mild comp cam, intake and exhaust). Best I can figure is the cam sensor is weak due to compensating for how bad the crank sensor was...and I can’t find a part for a 98 cam sensor! I can find plenty for 99-02 LS engines...so does anyone know if it’s the same part or not? I’ve been turning wrenches too long to assume it is just because it’s the same engine. Thanks in advance!

Josh

Yeah. I know it has one, I’ve seen the reading from it when the car is hooked up to the computer...and I really don’t want to tear it down and have to wait who knows how long to get the car back up again. To get that cam sensor out I don’t see any other way other than to pull the intake to get to it. I figure someone out there has to have done one and would know I hope!

I did. That was one of several forums I tried that had no activity. I’m just thankful I’m getting replies now.

The parts manual list the sensor number as 12560229 for a 1998 and 12561211 for a 99-02. GM Parts Direct shows the 98 number as discontinued, but makes no reference if the part supersedes to the 99-02 number. I would call a Chevrolet Dealer Parts Department and ask them, they should know. As for replacing the sensor, the service manual says you'll need to remove the intake to get to it.

Thank you very much. This is some good intel here and explains some of this craziness I’ve been dealing with! There is a light at the end of the tunnel!

Trying to follow your logic. The Cam sensor is a position sensor. Its an input to the PCM. It never had any idea that the crank sensor was failing. It did not work harder it simply reported the position of the cam like it has done since day one. The miss fire caused by the failing crank sensor would be hardest on the outputs from the PCM and the mechanical side of the engine. If the Cam sensor is failing it is a complete random event unrelated to the crank failure.
