The one on the kick panel side way up high? That should be the EBCM. (Electronic brake control module).

 

I got the board out of my BCM and used a Weller soldering gun to heat up the joints and flow new solder unto them. The bottom of the "T" was the coldest solder joint I have ever seen. Just to be sure everything worked properly, I plugged the board back in to the circuit under the dash to try it out. The radio works fine, as does the power windows, but the ignition no longer works. What the heck happened??? I got some solder overflowed onto the little component marked "122" next to that lower cold joint, but I heated it and cleaned it off. Did I fry something? BTW, GM should get a letter of comendation for thier fabulous soldering process. Shouldn't this all be covered by some sort of recall in that it is so common with their vehicles?

 

Hopefully you didn't overheat that "122" resistor. You didn't flow anything to the back side at all?
Btw, recalls are vehicle safety related issues. A 15+ year old poorly soldered BCM isn't a safety issue.

 

That's all you got? Hopefully I didn't overheat that "122"? So, what is "that 122" and what would overheating it do? You aren't very helpful, but I did get my s**t straight about whining about a "15 year old poorly soldered BCM" (the car is 13 years old, so I have to wonder where GM was keeping that board for the two years prior). I'll try to be more respectful in future.

Yeah sure you will, but I won't hold my breath. Were you laying heat directly on top of the resistor (or close to that)? Not all electronics like getting toasted. And don't ask me what that specific one does, I dunno. Although at this point, I might not have told you even if I did know! lol

 

Typical attitude from a gifted electrical genius like yourself. Anyway, I don't want to break your heart, but I got the thing running this morning by re-installing the board in the box and the box in the bracket. Starts and runs like a charm now. I don't understand this any better than you did that half a$$ed coment about "overheating that 122 resistor" but the car runs now. Thanks for all your help.

After much wailing and gnashing of teeth, I pulled mine out to see the fail point. Re-flow is the solution.

sounds like this is what my kids 97 z28 needs. been checking wiring, tore radio out to make sure my boy wired it right, what a nightmare! I will be doing this mod by the end of the week, and will probably lose sleep at nite til i try it! hope this is it

 

This turns out to be one of the most common electrical issues with this car. Good luck with your job... Sure beats paying GM $300 for a new unit.
