Any idea how much horsepower I lost?
Today my car started to bog down at lower RPMs, almost like it was missing. Cleaned out the throttle body and noticed that while it was running fine without the MAF plugged in , plugged it back in and it ran like ****. The guy I bought it off of had upgraded it so I just put the stock one back on and everything is perfect again, with the exception of the check engine light staying on. I was looking online and found some that had the screens and some without the screens ranging anywhere from 150 bucks up to 400. I've got a K&N filter on it as well, read that can cause some problems with certain MAF's. Basically what I'd like to know if I should bother spending the money to get a new one and if I should do I need to have the screen on it? This whole screen or no screen debate has proponents on both sides on LS1Tech.com and I know about jack and **** when it comes to fuel injected engines. The only thing that worries me is that the MAF that I took off didn't have a screen. When I pulled it off there was a feather stuck to one of thewire/rodsensors, makes me wonder what other kind of **** has been shooting through there and into my engine.
The stock MAF is good up to around 400HP, so save your money. Removing the screen may gain a few horses, but I doubt that you will notice it. One of the problems with the K&N filters is that if too much oil is applied to the filter, the oil vapor will contaminate the MAF, to the point wherethe oilwon't get completely burned off the hot wires during the burn off cycle, and the engine will eventually run poorly.
