Ok now I’m gonna need some advice/guidance from the experts on this one. What is the best way to measure the slack in the timing chain on a 99 camaro 3.8L? I have a Haynes book it says the “total free play between the sprockets should not exceed 1” “ I’m taking it as remove the retainer and measure both sides for the total! Is that correct?
To Gorn: it’s showing your comment in my email but not on the thread, but when you say all the slack do you mean pull the tensioner as tonight as it will go or do you mean untill there is resistance?
Here is a pic of it if it helps
I started a thread but it was too much typing to be complete. The manual will show you the procedure, also check youtube of a how to: check a timing chain. You can also check the inside of the cover for spots it was hitting. It should leave marks.
The counter balance behind the timing chain can also cause a knock but the odds are its a front main or number one rod. Before you put any real money in the engine look up Craby posted.
Pull your dip stick and look under magnification if you see sparkles (metallic flakes) then your engine is hurt.
So after new water pump and timing chain and tearing it down to the heads checking push rods valves etc back to square one but here is a video this time
