Can anyone here help me figure out why my car is acting up. First of all its a 94 Z28 6 speed manual. What happens is it is stalling on me during hard accelerations. It started stalling & now it shuts off at times & I would have to wait a couple seconds to restart it plus it has a bad smell when this occurs ( kind of like a tar smell) it seems to choke and it also started backfiring when I punch it. Example; Im at a red light and I want to accelerate to get to the next lane it starts stalling + backfiring (feels like its choking)and if I push it too hard it would shut off plus it has the bad smell. Ive been told it cold be misfiring but I believe its something else???

 

Could be a restricted catalytic converter. When it quits, get out right away and look under the car to see if the cat is glowing red. Also, before you take the car out, give the cat a couple of good whacks with your fist. If it sounds like it's filled with rocks, the innards of the cat is broken into chunks. Then it's time for a new cat, or bypass it if you don't require emissions testing.
