if you can't afford the manual swap, you definitely can't afford a 6 speed auto swap. In what way is it "going out"? Are the shifts overly firm? Is it slipping off the start? When it shifts?

Exactly. You dont seriously think switching to a 6 speed is gonna be cheap and easy do you?
