My car will not engage in park and the shifter moves freely what would cause this to happen

 

did it just start doing it? cable may be unhappy, shift arm on trans may be lose or broken, something in the shift console may be lose or damaged.

it's never done it this is the first it has happened.

 

better check the cable for the shifter, it may be coming apart, would not be good to lose ability to shift if it were to break. look in the factory manual, it will show how to dig into the console and see if something is not happy there.
