Default ratchet shifter/gate shifter

ive been looking into a ratchet shifter or a gate shifter for my 89 camaro. Im still a little hazey on how they work. Can i just keep it in regular drive then just throw it into manual? or do i have to keep shifting all the time? Are they basically like an old school tip-tronic (like what the volkswagons, audis, acruas, ect. have)

thank you
mike

I had a b&m ratchet shifter in my 92 and what is does is just makes it like a manual so you can shift when you want and not skip from first to third, but you can put it in drive and drive like you always have. I never ratcheted unless i was racing or wanted to make things interesting.

I had the B&M mega shifter in my 84 and did not like it. Ratcheting it down into lower gears it would hit the top of the console and push through and was not smooth acting. I put in a universal Hurst into my moms 84 S10 and it is a simpler mechanism and works much better. It does not have a handle to pull. The shifter lifts up to get out of park and push down to get into drive and ratchest into 3,2and 1.
After having a B&M I would go with a Hurst.
