Your expert motor swap advise
Hello all
i just brought this 89 iroc z it has a 305/ automatic trans w/overdrive (700r4 i think) in it now and i want more power i have two options available right now
option 1- i have a big block 454 out of a 1987 tow truck that
will need rebuild and performance upgrades
this motor is not fuel inj. I think the exaust ports
on the heads are oval. With everything from intake
to oil pan for 400.00
option 2- i have access to a ls1 engine i can get from a friend
that looks to be complete except computer, milage is
unknown but he does know it ran. For 1000.00
option 3- i have seen a few deals for ls motor complete with
trans for about 4k
my 700r4 is all i have right now trying to stay within 4k budget if possible for drivetrain. Then i have labor cost my question is which do you think would be most cost effective and easiest route to go. Or maybe you have some other way i can go
my plan is to be at about 400 rwhp on motor please let me have your input

Well fitting a 454 in these cars is no easy way to go. And from what I have been told, trying to put in an ls1 you're looking at about 10k total, because your trans can't hold the power, nor can the rear end, and you will have to get the comp and wiring harness and everything working together. Is the motor tpi or tbi? I would stick with fuel injected, and just put a bigger motor under your current fuel injected system, look at 383 strokers, seems to be a very popular thing with these cars and what I hope I can do later.
