For the real deal streetable fun motor you can get a turn-key 350 with about 300hp all day long for about 4k. I'm swapping out one right now in my 87. I went with a stroker though with a lot of upgrades between that and the new 700-R4 (aka 4L60) its right about 10K. You do not need to swap out transmissions as the stock 700R4 will easily take 350-400HP, but get it rebuilt. There is no such thing as fast and easy. I think all you'll do is spend a lot of money on an old worn out motor that was never great even on day one.

The K&N air filter will put you at 15 - 17 hp at the top. The hypertech chip varies with each motor. I've seen some shoot the hp rating as much as 80 hp and some just 20 hp. Thats dynoed at my friends shop. To help you out more If your skilled or know someone close. Long tubed headers are proven to put more of a thump out your muffler and gain you 21 hp. Shorty headers are not that great. They look great but there mere inches longer that stock manifolds. You will not gain much there. Sorry. Throttle body spacer will rack you in 2-5 hp. But like I have always preached that the emissions on the camaro not only take up a 1/4 of your engine compartment but it also robs you of about 35 hp. If you have to keep the smog pump and box and tubes and vacuum lines and the list goes on and on.... The least you can do is get a cat back system from flowmaster, but lose the cats. Those cats rob you 10 horsepower. A flowmaster muffler actually helps in the area as well as sounding beautiful. Good luck!!!
