there are people who are good at programming and mapping those chips, which may be worth it depending on what you are trying to do. it would probably be more effective to swap to a 3.4 if your looking for more performance for your buck.

NJ makes a good ponit. Some years ago we (my son and I) went the route with one of these engines. Chips, cam, porting the heads, high compression pistons, headers etc. , nd dyno tuning. The car was somewhat faster, but it was not worth the effort. The engine is just too small for a 3500 lb car. If you wanr to go the 3.4 route the swap should be a piece of cake. Make sure you gat en engine from a Camaro or an S10 truck. The ones made for front drive cars will bolt up but the block is configured to mount sideways and has no attachment points for front to back mounts. If you buy a new computer it won't do much for you. In these cars all the smarts are in the MemCal chip plugged into the computer.
