Default Hypertech comp chip

How much HP and torque on average would a hypertech computer chip make for a 1991 Camaro RS 305 V8 auto. I just want to throw on a K&N airfilter, hypertech chip and a throttle body spacer. How much HP/Torque power gain am i looking at? Thanks all!

With those mods you should gain a least 75 horsepower at the front wheels. Gee, I wish I did that before dropping in a 350.

Are you being sarcastic or am I going the right route? I don't want to drop in a new engine and i dont want to mess with any cams or anything like that. Just some easy bolt-on performance mods. I'm not looking to street race, I am just disappointed with the 170HP it is putting out for a V8. I want to at least break the 200HP mark, to hopefully feel a greater acceleration at low speeds 0-60MPH.

So if what I am wanting to do will deliver that, where it feels like it has some guts to it, then it is okay with me. Thanks for the info!

You are right about being sarcastic about your three useless mods. The only thing thatMIGHT improve that 170 hpis a full catback exhaust (15/20 hp est). My opinion is to forget about performance and spend the money on appearance items.

So there is nothing I can do to spend about $300 to get above the 200HP mark other than the exhaust? That sucks.

the only way to garanteea hp gain like that is a cam or new heads. if you want bolt on power for a n/a motor out of everything you can possibly do, you might get 30 to 40 hp with intake, full exhaust, carb, and air filter. if you ask me, get a good intake manifold for around150 or 200 bucks, and short headers for around 200 with a off road ypipe around 200 or 250and a cat back exhaust about like 300 or 400. i have a set of hooker short headers and a hooker off road y pipe and im ordering a hooker cat back. all together its like 650 oor 700 bucks. sorry man but for a 305, theres not much you can except save up for a new motor.

Okay. How much am I looking at for a refurb or new 350 installed? just an estimate. Thanks, and what would the HP rating be for that? would I have to replace transmission, etc for a engine swap?

Just my 2 cents.

But the exhaust system on a 305 is a disaster at best...

No matter what you do, you will have to upgrade the exhaust if you want to make any power. (The stock exhaust on your ride will need to be upgraded anyway if you put a 350 in it. Otherwise you have the same cruddy exhaust holding back even more horsepower) Both the manifolds and the Y-pipe are a disaster on these vehicles.

If you want to stay anywhere near $300, You could get a set of headers with a y-pipe for around $200 on e-bay, or $400 from summit. Edelbrock makes a really nice set.
If you have a few more bucks, spring for replacement Hi-flow Cats. should get you some decent HP gains without spending anywhere near as much as you would with an engine swap.

Uh actually, You get more HP and torque out of a Hypertech chip than I originally thought. I dont know the exact numbers, I havent taken it to a dyno yet, but the chip does add some horsepower. It depends really though what your going to do with it. Me, I drive my camaro daily so Im going to leave the 305 cuz the gas is decent. Im in the process of buying some headers for it right now and its already got a performance cat back exhaust system on it. As of right now, Im thinking Im right at or just above 200 HP. I should be takin it to a dyno in the next week or so, ill post the results up after. But your best bet to get more power if you wanna keep the engine, is full exhaust, a hot chip, throttle body spacer, and a KN filter.
