the fuel pump **** the bed in my 87 rs an i've herd there's ways around droppen the tank out. if anyone could point in me in the right direction would help alot thanks

 

4th gen's appear to be able to get away with it easier than a 3rd gen can. I tried with my 91, and the only way you're going to get the sending unit/pump out with cutting a "hatch" is if you cut all of your steel lines. Then you'll have to flare and fitting at least the high pressure supply line so you don't blow the car up by using a half-assed hose patch technique instead. I went that far with mine and ended up dropping the tank and doing it the right way. Here's what the tank and solid lines look like:
